Thank you so much for sharing the Shangri-Las! My mom's dad also died when she was 6. Her mother had to raise 3 children alone. I found it strange when I was reading this story of Mary. I'm going to ask my mom about the Shangri-Las. ❤️
Leader of the Pack felt like a rebellious song to me as a teen. I was 'not allowed' to rebel but I could thru music...Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Shangri Las! Thank the universe for music!!
I bought The Best of The Shangri-Las on CD many years ago. I use to drive around LA listening to them and I never changed the CD. Also, remember seeing them on the Ed Sullivan show in the 60s. Loved this band. ❤️
Ohhh wow that sounds so nice. Driving in the summer sun, listening to them. I feel transported directly to your memory. Thank you so much for sharing this :)
Wow, they were Queens girls, Cambria Heights. Thank you for the heartfelt history decades after their hit songs. Such a distinctive sound. Recognize their songs from the very first notes. Sorry they have lost the leader of their pack. Btw I am a Queens girl . . .
I coveted Mary’s severe part and comb over hair. I hated my large forehead when I was a kid and had fine thin hair that wouldn’t do anything. That Mary’s blonde hair was rope thick and could be parted from behind her ear into a forehead-disguising swoop was my absolute desire. RIP, Mary; you trendsetter.
Thank you for this lovely remembrance, Jesse, and for the wonderful quotation from Lyle L. about not needing to be tough, but definite. That is a gem. Sending warm wishes to you, and everyone.
Well l was 11 years old when this song came out and l loved it! To my young ears it was so daring and then so sad. I was fascinated with motor bikes and the idea of hanging on to a young leather clad boy seemed very romantic. I knew every word and used to sing it loudly around the house. My dad pronounced it maudlin and was a bit freaked out that his daughter was growing up! It was played on the radio when she died and yes l still knew every word. RIP Mary 🙏
I was buying 45s when the Shangri-Las burst upon the radio! I rushed to get the single and I just played it over and over and over... May Mary rest in that Eternal Peace...

Oh thank you so much! I did asked her. She didn't know them. But she liked their name. She found the Shangri-Las a very funny name.❤️

this is a lovely remembrance, Jesse. Walking in the Sand was one of my favorite songs ever.
Thank you so much, Rosemary. It's so nice to think of you listening to that song.
Mary back in 2008 on a Telethon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMjDkSKX-lw The Shangri-Las definitely had a sound that captured a whole era, just like The Ronettes.
Oh my gosh, this is so great!!

Ohh wow, Queens girls, you are part of the pack, too :)
It's a personal feeling of joy that the music I grew up with has reached the people who came in afterwards.
Jesse, I love your reverence and respect for Mary. Thank you for the gorgeous way you honor her in this post.

Beautiful sensitive tribute. Love the point about the sound of sisters in harmony. Thank you Jesse.
Great trip back to the oldies! Love your perspective.
