Date/Time/ Location: November 1st, 2025- Vacaville, California
I'm feel rushed lately. Time has not been on my side for the last few weeks.
What am I listening to: An Ambulance go by, and the air conditioner in my apartment. It gets hot on the Upper floors in my apartment complex.
Any other sensory elements: Piles of blankets, pillows, lights on in my apartment.
What am I working on: I'm writing about a family who spends Christmas at Lake Tahoe. They go up there to ski and play in the snow. There's a few adventures in that story.
What is the best part of the day: The afternoon, so I can relax.
What is the hardest part of the day? The mornings because I have a hard time trying to get things together.
What am I excited about: Spending Thanksgiving and Christmas with my folks.
What am I grateful for: Still having my folks around and my sister. That I'm still able to go swimming and go for walks. A roof over my head.
Is there anything I'd like to accomplish today: Getting some housework done. Read the remainder of my Stephen King book today. Going to my neighbor's house, so we can finish the remainder of our Halloween movie that we saw yesterday.
What can I do better today than yesterday: Go for a longer walk, since my body is recovering from my flu/ Vivid shots that I got on Wednesday.
What is a quote/ affirmation that resonates with you today: If you first don't succeed, try, try again.
How am I feeling now: More accomplished than I did a half hour ago.
It was wonderful to see your poetry reading. Your warm smile is like sunshine.
The theme of leaves is so fitting. Your leaf drawing is beautiful. I love the detail of the veins. It reminds me of the living being of leaves. Nature drawing nature. How amazing!
You ring a golden bell when you explained how we plug in our devices to charge so we as natural beings need to plug into nature to recharge. I’ve been spending more time outdoors now that the desert heat has lifted. I hugged tree and it swayed with the wind and felt like it was hugging me back!
Thank you for the writing exercise. I often need prompting. I’ll be back with my answers.
I jotted down the answers from the assignment late last night as I thought about that evening 13 years ago when Hurricane Sandy hit NYC. I had only had Rico for one week at the time. He must have wondered what he had gotten himself into with no power, and the only entertainment, me singing my repertoire of 60s classics lol.
Anyways, the assignment: Lee Penman, at time of writing in Jersey City, 10/29/25, 11.50 pm
How are you feeling today: Tired but well😊
What are you listening to: Rebecca Foon – Black Butterflies
Any other sensory elements around you: Darkness and a glowing salt lamp
What are you working on: finding late-night peace before I fall asleep
What was the best part of the day today: making changes in people's health
What was the hardest part of the day today? It was somewhat chaotic at times, demanding multitasking- which is not something I am proficient in:)
What are you excited about: My day off on Sunday to focus on my writing
What are you grateful for today? I try to be grateful for the little things that are present every day and bring a smile to my face.
Is there anything else you would like to accomplish today? I think I am good😊
What are you looking forward to for tomorrow? In all honesty, getting home at night as the weather forecast is dreadful.
What’s something you can do a little better tomorrow than you did today: multitasking!!
What is a quote/affirmation that resonates with you today: "Be present in all things and thankful for all things." Maya Angelou
Hope to get to the assignment this weekend. Very busy days which is helpful in that it diverts my attention from the horrors in our country. Prayers to the Caribbean islands.
Today I felt soft rain in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. I taught a class for students learning to jam with American Roots music at James Madison University. Came home and looked at several paintings in progress, sometimes looking is the most important part of the process. Wrote some words in a journal, read some words in the new memoir by Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam. As Suzi says below, it really has been a Nick Drake kind of day...in a good way. I also thought about a couple of book projects I'm working on and enjoyed the rain.
Jesse, it's been a busy day and I'm finally getting to sit and reflect, per your prompt - and yes
sometimes a prompt is necessary.
Here in the "holler", situated in the Sauratown Mountains of northern Stokes Co. NC, it's been raining for 3 days straight - with a momentary pause. Boules are on their 2nd proof. Pup and kitty are complaining about the rain and waiting for dinner. It's been a Nick Drake kind of day, one cd after another. In this moment I can't complain. The best part of the day, composing a couple of emails, and accomplishing a few inside chores. The hardest part - getting to the "next right thing".
Grateful to be upright and moving and excited about Bread of Angels arriving. Looking forward to the sun coming up. What could I do better? Pay more attention to what's in front of me - That said, Simone Weil's quote "Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity" resonates .
As for how I'm feeling now...relatively calm. Thanks for including some of your favorite music.
And Jesse, your thoughtful posts are always appreciated.
Thank you for being so genuine and for sharing your wise way of seeing life. You are uber generous to take the time to connect to us so honestly…for being real…for being the inimitable Jesse…with deep appreciation…Lois
Today I am working on the website for my small business. Things are moving real slow because of the insurance, but I want to be ready to go once the policies are ready. I keep a 5 year, one line a day diary, in addition to a journal. So when I don't really feel like writing, I can just record the day. It's interesting to look back at one year ago. Well, it's been a bumpy road, but I'm still here (!) enjoying the fall colors and all the rain at night. It's a reminder that we get through things...All things must pass.
Reading and reflecting on your post on this sleepy October afternoon here in the U.K. as daylight fades. I am going to try to set time aside for myself tonight to reflect and answer these questions !
I think Alice somewhere says “who in the world am I ? Ah, that’s the great puzzle.”
Warmest October wishes Jesse ! Have a good day ! 🍂
I volunteer leading a group on nonviolent communication at our local jail. Yesterday was the second session with a new group, and I‘m still flying on how well it went, and today got all my papers and notes for it in order. I feel happy and motivated to prepare for the next session in 3 weeks, because I‘ll be traveling to NY for a good week in between. Going to see your mother (town hall) and visit my mother! And I don‘t want to bring „work“ with me on the trip.
I went from a strict 10-day silent fasting retreat with meditation 6 times a day, at a very quiet place in the middle of nowhere, to 5 busy days in Paris for Horses, lots of exploring, a couple of days in Vienna and now back home again. Despite feeling tired from the travel excitement and horrors in the outside world, I feel a pleasant inner peace and optimism. No rushing to get things done, just one thing at a time. And if I start to feel stressed, breathe deeply and slow down, get my bearings. It really helps.
Fall is my favorite time of year, so I enjoy your reflective posts even more! I like your suggestions and how you so aptly describe the mood. Thank you!
My favorite quote these days is from Emerson, but I am catsitting at my daughter‘s apartment & don‘t have the book with me. Maybe tomorrow if I think of it.

Always love a quote from Alice in Wonderland!
