You are all the ambience we need. You have such a big heart. Watched an old video with Michael Stipe singing The Leaper. You accompanied him. How beautiful and it felt like I was spotting a friend in a photo. It gave me joy. So imagine how much joy this video gave me. May you feel joy today.
I literally my sacred heart candle today for you. It came yesterday in the mail. When I purchased it I had no idea it was for this moment. Cheers to your anniversary and all that love and follow you.
Congrats Jesse! I have some Edward Gorey goodies that I picked up at the Edward Gorey house for you that I would love to get to you sometime. Happy Solstice! 🕯️
Jesse - I’d love a postcard from you and the card about your father’s anniversary. You are such a sweet light. I loved your closet video. Thank you! ♥️
Hi Jesse, thank you for this message. You are such a positive and kind person which is just what one needs when one is judging oneself so harshly as I tend to do! I wish you a very happy Christmas from blowy rainy UK ! 🎄
Happy Solstice Jesse and congratulations on your year on substack. i'm so sorry i will have to leave off being a subscriber, i so admire your writing and compassion but when i needed to change down from an annual to a monthly sub i was forfeited the balance of my subscription without warning. so im sorry but will have to go, all good wishes for the coming year
Happy Substack writing anniversary Jesse! :-) Thank you so much! And all the very best for the future!
That was a beautiful message and video. I loved the candle lighting and the fairy lights. I read the written part of your post first - I tend to do that with all posts - and then watched the video on my laptop. It was really fun because it's evening here now and so I've got my fairy lights on on my desk (very overloaded and needing a good sort/clear out so the total opposite of your closet video otherwise :-) By the way it was a very good improvisation I thought and such a lovely video, so encouraging and warm.)
I'm trying to get better at noticing what has happened and what was good more - (I might be one of those people who can occasionally say that the time goes too fast... might be connected to my job - feels like it's never ending but I have learned to make more time for myself, which at the moment makes me feel a bit lazy because I have an exam coming up in the second week of January).
I terms of long term goals I really hope I find my own niche in a way that it's possible to find the people that are just your people (I love the jumper!)
Somehow this year has been more energising and positive in the second half even though I'm usually finding the colder and darker months more challenging. Maybe because I clarified some difficult things for myself in the summer.
Happy end of year/solstice/Christmas/ Hannukah time for everyone!
That was genuinely moving, Jesse, thank you. And congratulations on your first year of Substack! Following along with your and your mother's posts has been fulfilling not just for what the two of you have shared but for the feeling of community that I've found here. I've been happy to have found a sense of connection to others here and have been grateful for them as much as yourselves. Living abroad, having responsibilities of my own, it can be easy to become isolated--especially when your language skills may not be exactly fluent.
Taking stock of what we've done well, done right, gotten through is something I definitely need to do, not just for myself but also for my family. My wife sometimes gets a bit cynical and down on herself--the weather doesn't help--but she has done a lot too; I hope I can remind her of that.
For myself, I hope to get my own Substack going next year and start sharing. I was excited to get to work one day last week when my laptop crashed. It's irreparable, but the data has (apparently!) all been saved, including a short story I'd been working on intensely before it went kaputt.
Forgive me if I overshare! Perhaps it's something I need, but pay it no mind otherwise. It's cathartic, I think, and again I'm grateful for the space you've created here.
