So happy to get to read this. I saw it in my inbox but recently have been sooo slow at reading anything. I love his drawings. I had a practical cats calender in 2017 and it was my favourite calender ever. :-) I'm a bit jealous of everyone living in the US or at least over the Atlantic - the book fair sounds amazing and obviously the Gorey House does too.....
I had a 2001 desktop calendar of daily Gorey images, a Christmas birthday gift if I recall, what was called "A Gorey Year." The image selected for September 11 (http://gregoryrosa.com/titus.jpg) was so prescient it's hard to believe even now, at least in my interpretation: T and Titus... two T's... as in Twin Towers..."flew into"... and of course the associated horror of that day.
I love this. And I love Edward Gorey’s magical art and mark on my world for many decades now. I adore the Fantod pack. Thanks for this delightful read full of so much to think about.
I came across that book of his and T.S. Eliot at the library last year! I'd never seen it before, so I had to check it out. Such a fun, weird little book.
A few years ago my brother wrote this article about finding out that Gorey's ashes are buried in the town where he works in Ohio. We had no idea!
Thank you Jesse, for hi-lighting the intriguing illustrations and works of Edward Gorey on his 99th birthday.
After reading your in depth tribute to Mr. Gorey, I had to immediately purchase “Old Possums Book of Practical Cats” and today read aloud most of the poems to my partner, then lingered on the wonderful, whimsical Gorey images.
Our collection of Gorey’s little books includes “The Broken Spoke” and “The Epiplectic Bicycle”, among others.
You are a kindred spirit for Gorey and feline fans alike Jesse.
I had a similar childhood, and discovered him at a similar juncture when I was 14. Amphigorey and Amphigorey II got me through high school. Thanks for sharing your story!
First thing: of everything of yours that I’ve ever read, this is my favorite. Whatever went into putting this together, keep that up!
Thank you for all of these links, and for the birthday tribute to the great Edward.
I hope you have a wonderful trip to the Gorey House. It’s marvelous! Down the street from there is the epic Parnassus Books; please stop by because it’s actually magic. No matter what I wander in looking for, whatever whim takes me, they have exactly what I want, in decent condition and for a reasonable price.
The ability to ‘find new anchor points’ when life casts us out into unfamiliar territory takes a certain attention, and/or a serendipitous encounter. How wonderful that you found Gorey and that you drew such strength and comfort from his quirky brilliance. Cheers to him, his talent, impact and the light he sparked in you!
There are so many things that I love about this post, but I will try to be brief:) I love that it came to my attention just as I completed my Kindle version of M Train. I love how your mother took you to a bookstore where a display so captivated you, and I love the insight it provides into the transitional phase of your life moving from Michigan to Manhattan - and all that entailed. It reminded me of moments in my own life, different situations but similar feelings. It also gave me inspiration tonight to move towards completing a chapter in my own book which has been evading my grasp all week.
Join the Chat if you can for an exercise/discussion around some different Edward Gorey quotes :)

Ohh wow, I looked up Parnassus Books, it looks wonderful!! I'll have to go for sure!!
I really enjoyed reading this. So sorry that you went through such sadness like that. Thank you for sharing such a personal story about your youth.
