This post is so beautiful Jesse... I just read it before going to bed, my window is open and now I am looking outside in case a firefly is around...✨️ thanks for sharing this magical moment. Ps. and much love to you dear lighting bug!😊
Magic indeed - our world is filled with it. If we would just take a moment to notice. At least once a day I catch myself moving without awareness - caught up in thoughts or worries. - and I'm brought
back to the present by a nudge from the universe. There is the deer family coming up thru the bottom, or the hummers dive bombing the feeders, or the moon right in my line of sight now that the blinders are off. Fireflies can't help but be noticed - signaling to each other and us. This year
they were not as active here - or maybe I just wasn't out at the right time. Turns out there are
40 species of fireflies in NC. One in particular is the rare Blue Ghost firefly that can be found
in undisturbed forests near Asheville. I've been fortunate enough to witness these tiny magical
creatures a couple of times. Quite a sight.
Thanks, Jesse, for this lovely post - a reminder to appreciate the magic that surrounds us. And thanks to the little firefly.
That is great that you have them in NYC! In south Germany, where I live, their sight has become super rare. This summer I saw just 2. That was it - even though I live in the woods (only in June and early July they fly around here).
Last weekend my friends and I went to our concert series in our small town north of Detroit. We were just talking about hearing on the news that lightning bugs are dwindling in population. We all of a sudden started seeing them amongst the crowd. It was magical. They were all over the place. And and amongst them came the dragonflies.
Thank you, Jesse, for this beautiful post. It is a bright reminder that the magic is there every day, but we vary in our openness and receptivity.
I have barely been outside the past few days. Instead, I‘m indoors fostering 4 kittens - 3 siblings and an only child, all motherless, around 8 weeks old. Caring for them, playing, working on their socialization and trying to integrate the only child, who is rather scared. She was limping and out of it today, so I took her to the vet. She didn‘t hurt herself jumping around, she had aches and pains from a high fever. The vet said its contagious, so I need to separate her from the others. So for the first time since January of last year, I have a cat (kitten) in my room. Still mourning my two old cats, but not ready to adopt again. This all happened unexpectedly. My daughter asked me Thursday night if I would consider it (she volunteers at the shelter), and Friday afternoon they were here. Suddenly my day revolves around 4 little beings who I am preparing for their lives, like a mother. It is a joyful task. And now it‘s time to go cuddle with my little patient!
Your posts are uplifting. It‘s nice to remember there is so much more to life, the unexpected magic of it. Like your firefly!
I love this post so much, Jesse. Your firefly encounter is wonderful; thank you so much for sharing it.
I have noticed so many more fireflies this summer than in recent years. I see them all the time in Central Park, low under the trees, just before sunset. I have tried to take videos of them but it never quite translates. I’m wondering how your video came out. I hope that some of the magic of the firefly comes through in yours.
I love how you put it that you’re “either a passenger or an outlaw.” Those words remind me of these, by my late friend, the poet Lucie Brock-Broido:
“Ninety-seven percent of my world is wizardry,
Three percent is organ, bone.
I was a passenger or a witness
In the crowd, anonymous & angelical.
Does not my heart astound you . . .”
Your heart astounds too, Jesse. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
Hi Jesse, sounds like you had a magical moment & also very much living in the present which is very easy to forget about that & all the little things that are happening on any given day.
Was not aware that these little insects were becoming scarce, not only here in the US but in other countries too, that is sad & disconcerting.
Out here in long island they seem to be doing well, I see em every year in the evening, they are indeed magical little creatures ;o)
Thank you so much Jesse, this is all so beautifully written. Hope you're doing well. Fireflies were very common to see in the backyard when I was a child. It was such a joy to see. Now they have completely disappeared from our cities. Thank you for sharing these images of your gentle little friend. I've never seen one ever since. Gentleness and frailty, these are the words that come to my mind in reading this. Much to contemplate, thank you Jesse! Love from Italy ✨🐝💛
You know, Robin, sometimes dreams come true 💫 and that's why I'm dreaming of it! Maybe we'll be lucky enough to see some floating around in the Elizabeth Street Garden!🦁✨✨🤗
Thank you for this beautiful story about your luminous friend.
I recently read an article about a study that reveals humans emit a subtle light that diminishes at the time of death. I thought about fireflies and how sad I became to see their light go out when people left them in the mason jars too long. I prefer to watch them glow and fly. It’s fun to keep track of the same one.
I have to go to work soon, Jesse. How I wish I could go to the Elizabeth Street Garden and hear you read your poetry instead. I would like that very much. Jesse, did I tell you I recently got a significant raise at work?? I found an old soda can in one of the shopping carts!! Now I can retire to Hawaii!!! Paul.
I am sitting in the entrance hall of my workplace here in Cologne, it is raining, I am waiting to cycle home as soon as the rain has stopped. Have a little firefly in my heart now. Love, Kristin
Thank you Jesse for the beautiful Story.💛 Hereby, I think of Johnny Depp’s new Art release „Let the Light in“. I wish I could take him by the hand and run across a meadow…

Fireflies, hummingbirds, butterflies, eagles in the wild, the white dove that stops by my house, all make time stand still.

I’m sorry you don’t see any fireflies now, Anna. I hope you can visit New York City sometime when they are around and you can see them here! ✨
