I felt intimidated by this fair for So many years, then one day as I was walking through the W.V. and had a couple of hrs. free I came upon it and was feeling adventurous. It was incredible and of course, I walked out with a couple of gems! What a treat! See you there!

Living in a small rural pocket in Lion's Head, Ontario, the next best thing to a genuine book fair would be our annual arena sale. The hockey arena itself isn't for sale but come August, it's the venue for a huge paperback-palooza. It's volunteer-run and the books are all donated by the community. Out back, you can buy peameal bacon on a bun or a hot dog from the Rotary club volunteers to ensure book-looking endurance.

Last year I found a 1950 edition of Kon-Tiki by Thor Heyerdahl in the piles and I just finished it in the nick of time--the spine finally broke and all of the pages were ready to flutter to the ground.

Thanks for the sneak peak of the glittery NY version of a book fair! The scavenger hunt for awesome books remains the same and border-less!

I often wonder where all the treasures go. It’s such a thrill, the sheer amount of possibilities, but also respects an inevitable and enormous responsibility to provide the necessary care that goes along with having worldly treasures tucked away in our personal libraries. Hats off to those who participate in this honorable service for all of man(women)kind.

I had to start a new Substack account today, I couldn't get on my old account for some reason.

Congrats and great to feel the love for books, photographs, manuscripts, maps, letters… As you know I have spent my working life photographically and digitally preserving all these great objects and I’m so happy new generations will get interested in their knowledgeable, transportive, and sometimes magical powers. The other day I was scanning a letter that Langston Hughes wrote. I always take a moment to try and feel some of the energy from the text and the handwriting- it’s an unexplainable feeling. A human connection that transcends human communication. I know you know. Can’t wait to hear more. ✉️📚🗺️🎞️

Love this, for years I had a book business. It was equine art and books. We bought and sold collectible horsey books. It was fun and gave me a chance to meet interesting folks at horse fairs and competitions. The books and art were fascinating. The books also very heavy. It was an interesting life. Do you remember the horse books you read as a child? Everyone seems to have a favorite author, illustrators we’re my favorite.

What a neat and niche business! What was the name of it? Black Stallion and Black Beauty were my childhood staples but do you remember Robert the Rose Horse? https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/1451858169/robert-the-rose-horse-by-joan-heilbroner?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=1980%26%23039%3Bs+horse+book&ref=sr_gallery-1-35&organic_search_click=1

Hi there, it was really fun. And I do recall so many of the favorites people would find in our stacks. The art was wonderful as well. Do you recall George Ford Morris? Portraiture of Horses? His art really stands out, he has a well known illustration for Black Beauty. Finding the books in junk shops, etc was the fun. Then rejoining them to the lovers. Thanks for noticing this. It was a special time in my life.

Hi Susan---sorry I missed this comment somehow! I had to look up George Ford Morris and his notable works. I really appreciate when someone wholly dedicates their life to one subject--be it illustrating horses or cats (do you know of Louis Wain?) https://www.artnet.com/artists/louis-william-wain/

I also live virtually through bookstore owners--what a great go. I'm glad you enjoyed your ride!
